Other Libraries in Oaxaca

  1. Bullet Biblioteca Andrés Henestrosa (Porfirio Díaz 115, Oaxaca de Juárez) has a collection of over 60 thousand books of primarily Latin American literature and history, also materials about art, architecture, anthropology, philosophy, education, linguistics, law and sociology, among other topics.

  2. Bullet  Biblioteca Beatriz de la Fuente del IIE-UNAM (Antonio de León 2, Oaxaca de Juárez) houses 6,500 volumes originally belonging to the late Beatriz de la Fuente.  The collection speciality is the arts and humanities of Mexico and includes 30 pre-Hispanic codices.  The library, located across The Alameda from the Cathedral, is affiliated with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

  3. Bullet  Biblioteca de La Fundación Cultural Bustamante Vasconcelos (Labastida 117, Oaxaca de Juárez) was founded by 5 of the 15 Bustamante Vasconcelos brothers and was created from their personal libraries.  The collection which includes books (in Spanish and English), periodicals, and 13,000 photographs of peoples of Oaxaca and other Mexican states, specializes in anthropology, architecture, and archaeology primarily related to Oaxaca.  

  4. Bullet  Biblioteca Francisco de Burgoa (Macedonio Alcalá s/n, Centro Cultural Santo Domingo, Oaxaca de Juárez) and the Nestor Sanchez Newspaper and Magazine Library, are housed in the former cloisters of the Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzman.  The Burgoa’s collection numbers 23,000 titles and includes a 1484 text on the works of Aristotle by Juan Versor.

  5. Bullet  The Biblioteca Infantil (José López Alavez 1342, Barrio de Xochimilco, Oaxaca de Juárez) is located in a light-filled building situated beside a tranquil garden.  There are reading rooms dedicated to children and teens, each filled with books, magazines, and other educational materials.  The library offers computers with Internet access and a variety of library programs.   The site also houses the Biblioteca Jorge Luis Borges, which contains resources for the visually impaired, including print materials in Braille and special computers.


  1. Bullet  Biblioteca Pública Central Estatal Margarita Maza de Juarez (Macedonio Alcalá 200, Oaxaca de Juárez) is a lending library housed in a newly renovated early 19th century building surrounding a beautiful courtyard on the Macedonio Alcalá.


  1. Bullet  Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (Macedonio Alcalá No 507, Oaxaca de Juárez) has two locations:  IAGO at M. Alcalá 507 has a splendid, large library specializing in art, architecture, archaeology, photography, movies, crafts, and design; also a permanent collection of over five thousand graphic works and temporary exhibition galleries.  IAGO at Av. Juárez 222 is a library of literature, poetry and theater. It also houses the collection of the Eduardo Mata Foundation (CDs and other items related to music).


  1. Bullet  The library of the Welte Institute (203 Emilio Carranza, Colonia Reforma, Oaxaca de Juarez) houses the most comprehensive and accessible bibliographic collection in Oaxaca on Oaxaca. The collection includes over 10,000 titles in English, Spanish, and other languages.
