Talk - Zen: The Times We’re In

In this presentation, we’ll reveal a bit about zen, which mostly means a bit about our lives in these times we’re in, and a little about the lives and times of zen women and men in other times and places. We hope to hear a little about your lives, too.

About the event

Zen is a practice and a way of being in the world that doesn’t depend on any belief, method or religion. Its roots go far into the past in China. It thrives in simple meditation, and in poetry, stories and conversations (koans) about our lives and this vast universe, and how those might be the same thing. Here’s a koan: “The tree withers and the leaves fall. What is happening?” Master Yunmen answers, “The golden wind is revealing itself.”

Presenters:

Virginia Filip was trained as a marine biologist. She has been a yoga and meditation teacher in Oaxaca for more than 30 years, and is founder and director of Casa del Angel Yoga Center. Her spiritual adventures took her many times to India and elsewhere, a journey she recounts in her recent book “Entre Dioses, Gurús y Mendigos.”  Virginia is also a therapist and avid painter. Some years ago she settled into zen and now co-teaches at Oaxaca Zen.

D Allen started zen practice in 1971 and around 2004 formed a meditation group in Oaxaca which later morphed into a zen group. D was a philosophy professor and also had a life as a geek in the early years of the internet. A permanent resident, he has visited and often lived in Oaxaca since 1990.
