About the Hike:  The hike from La Neveria to Latuvi takes place in an area of the Sierra Norte called the  Pueblos Mancomunados, located approximately 56 km. east of Oaxaca city. This is a region of communally-owned land shared by the residents of eight mountain villages. In recent decades a concerted effort has been made to conserve the forests and promote eco-tourism.  Managing their land in this way preserves these areas of extreme natural beauty. Visitors are asked to dress in earth tones and to avoid bright colors.

The high country of the Sierra Norte catches moisture that flows in from the Gulf of Mexico, which produces lush vegetation in the cloud forests. A great variety of bromeliads, ferns, mosses and orchids grow wild in the woods. Visitors should be aware that it is usually about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (6.6 degrees Celsius) cooler in the mountains than in Oaxaca city, so taking a light jacket and gloves is recommended.

Note: High altitude, 2,737 m. (8,980 ft). Significantly cooler than in Oaxaca City; jackets and hats recommended for warmth or fog or drizzle, especially in the morning.
