Talk - Day of the Dead Origins & Symbolisms
Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant and essential Mexican holiday that reunites the living and the dead. Far from a day of mourning, it's a joyful celebration of life, family, and memory, deeply rooted in a fascinating blend of ancient traditions.

Acerca del evento
The Presentation
Abraham will talk about the origins, pre-Hispanic Roots, as well as Catholic and Spanish
Influences on el Dìa de Muertos (Day of the Dead). The holiday is a powerful example of cultural and religious syncretism and the importance of family in Oaxacan society. The talk explores the modern interpretation of Dìa de Muertos, the ofrenda (altar) and the individual components typically included, and breaks down the significance of each day of the celebration. The presentation includes pictures of ofrendas, street and cemetery scenes. As a special treat, attendees will be invited to savor cups of hot chocolate, one of the ofrenda components, courtesy of Bliss Wilson and Jacque Scheinberg
The Presenter
Abraham is a native Oaxacan, who has lived most of his life here except for a year teaching Spanish in France. He has a degree in English and French from the UABJO and currently teaches Spanish, English and French at the UABJO and other schools and works as a translator/interpreter.
