Synopsis: Since the 1950’s, computer scientists have been trying to recreate human intelligence, and the term “Artificial Intelligence” entered our lexicon. Since then, advancements in computational hardware and software have enabled a new wave of algorithms to be developed. From Large Language Models (LLMs), Computer Vision (CV) and Neural Networks (NN), different algorithms and technologies now appear more frequently in our day-to-day lives.

But what is really going on? How does that home security camera identify people? How is ChatGPT able to have conversations? Dr Stefan Gillott will discuss the language and jargon used regarding AI, reveal how computer and data scientists use these technologies, and demystify the products being sold to you. This talk will range from the

philosophical to the technical and all levels of understanding are welcome.

Presenter: Stefan Gillott is a data scientist from England who first used machine learning during his Environmental Science PhD. He then went on to work at Dyson where he was a data scientist developing new digital products.
