Mitla and Yagul are the most important archeological sites near Oaxaca, after Monte Alban. Mitla, which became the religious center of the Zapotec empire after the decline of Monte  Alban, is notable for its many nearly-intact buildings, many of which exhibit striking architectural details, like the exquisite stone fretwork that adorns both exterior and interior walls.  

The palace complex at Yagul is impressive for its size and the presence of tombs and a large  ball court. The fortress hill behind the palace offers a great view of the Tlacolula valley.  The group will stop for lunch at the Sabor de Antequera restaurant, which provides a  stunning all-you-can-eat buffet.
