Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking book discussion centered on Octavia Butler's acclaimed novel, "Kindred," a sci-fi classic that Butler herself called "grim fantasy." This powerful story explores complex themes of race and gender, as the Black woman at its heart is repeatedly transported through time from 1976 Los Angeles to an early 19th-century Maryland plantation.
Whether you are a long-time fan of Butler's work or discovering "Kindred" for the first time, this discussion will provide a platform for sharing insights and perspectives. Come prepared to delve into the novel's rich narrative and its relevance to contemporary issues.
Presenter: Finn Hollister is an 18-year-old visual artist, student, and world traveler. While hailing from the USA, he has lived in Myanmar, Senegal, and now in Oaxaca, Mexico. He has a passion for reading and analyzing stories in both writing and film.
Co-Presenter: Ellis Brown, a resident of Oaxaca since 2022, arrived in México from Baltimore after retiring from a 30+ year career in higher education. During that tenure, he taught history, worked in community outreach and engagement, and helped university faculty and staff write, edit, and submit grant applications.
