ABOUT THE BOOK
Chile, mole y pozole is a Mexican phrase referring to a variety or assortment. The twelve stories collected here constitute just such an assortment – and at the same time, a heady cross-section of the best of contemporary Oaxacan short fiction. A boy desperate to have his bicycle stolen and a little girl who decides to walk home alone. Chaos in an upper-class subdivision and on an out-of-control bus. An engineer reconstructs his past from atop a wind turbine while a woman discovers hers during a revealing visit with her father. An insurance adjuster attempts to deal with a double life and an office worker, with an uncomfortable dinner invitation. Travels in time from the Manila Galleon of the colonial era to an informal 90’s video arcade. An adolescent sexual awakening and the mortal effects of marginalization at the Central de Abastos Market. All in a handsome, dual-language volume that is also perfect for language learners. Don’t miss a single one of these amazing stories in English, in Spanish…or in both. It’s time to break out the chile, mole and pozole!
ABOUT THE PUBLISHER
Since 2010, the Matanga bookbinding workshop has been devoted to the production of handmade notebooks and journals. Each one is made with carefully chosen local materials, combining classic and contemporary techniques. Our work is carried out in collaboration with the artistic community of Oaxaca, sharing experiences and techniques to create a strong network of collaborators. In 2019, having noticed that traditional publishing houses were not enough to discover and promote the work of current Oaxacan writers, Matanga launched as a publishing house. Inspired by currents such as Art Nouveau or Bauhaus, which believe that everyday objects can be both functional and beautiful, we want to create beautiful pieces that people want and can acquire. Too often, the editions that come out on the market are either beautiful but expensive, or inexpensive but without aesthetic care. Our goal is to produce beautiful books at an affordable cost in order to spread the word about the talent that exists in Oaxaca: master papermakers, bookbinders, graphic artists, printers and of course the writers who publish with us.
