It's a party! Author Cindy Weill will talk about the process of creating her bilingual children's book, ¡Tocamos! Mexican Folk Art Music Makers in English and Spanish (Lee and Low 2025)
Maestro Avelino Pérez of La Union Tejalapam the wood carver who handmade each musical bird figure. ¡Tocamos! is the 8th book in Weill's series First Concepts in Mexican Folk Arts which uses the artisanal work of Oaxaca for its illustration. Book signing and cake and refreshments served. This program is free and open to all.

¡Tocamos! Mexican Folk Art Music Makers in English and Spanish was published by Lee & Low in February 2025. Each of the beautiful bird musican figures were hand made by Avelino Pérez of La Unión Tejalapam, Oaxaca, México. Otto Piron photographed each avian figure for the book. Cynthia Weill has lived in Vietnam, Spain and Mexico. She currently resides in New York City. Cindy holds a Doctorate of Education from Columbia University. Her dissertation work focused on intercultural collaboration in bookmaking with rural artisans. She is the author of Ten Mice for Tet (Chronicle) AbeCedarios, Opuestos, Colores de la vida, Count me in!, Mi Familia Calaca, Animal Talk, Let's Work and Vámonos (Cinco Puntos Press an imprint of Lee & Low). These books have received starred reviews and multiple awards. In her free time, she likes to read and hang out with artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico.
