About the event

Indigo is a beloved dye throughout the world with a rich and dark history. It is a dye that captivates us, but how many of us know about how it gets made. Would it surprise you to hear that this magnificent blue dye comes from the green leaves of plants? Here in Oaxaca, we are lucky to live close to the town of Santiago Niltepec, where traditional production of indigo dye still takes place. This presentation walks through the mesmerizing process of indigo dye and touches on some of the challenges producers currently face in keeping their traditions alive.

Presenter: Abigail Rothberg is an indigo dyer originally from New York City, who now lives in the Tlacolula Valley. She fell in love with the indigo process in Niltepec around five years ago and has since visited the town several times, uncovering more about this beautiful and complicated process with each visit.
