About the event
Synopsis:
This talk is based on my 40 years of ethnographic research and teaching about men and masculinities in Mexico. I’ll talk about some of the conclusions, conundrums, and challenges of studying a group more disparaged than carefully considered. (And coming from the U.S., I can’t help but ask: Who’s calling whom macho?) I’ll try to cover topics ranging from fathering to vasectomies to suicide in Oaxaca, Mexico City, and beyond. No pop quiz at end, but I do hope folks will actively participate with their own experiences and opinions.
Presenter:

Matthew Gutmann is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Brown University and a Visiting Researcher at the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social—Pacífico Sur in Oaxaca. He has carried out ethnographic and other research on gender, sexuality, politics, health, and militarism, primarily in Mexico, China, and the U.S.
