About the event

Presentation:

Since the 1970s, LGBTQ+ rights efforts in Mexico have become an important part of the fabric of the country's social movements. In this talk, Dr. McCaughan explores this history, with an emphasis on the role that art has played in advancing the movements' goals in de-stigmatizing homosexuality and how it is lived in Mexican culture.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Edward J. McCaughan, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at San Francisco State University, is a researcher, writer, and curator. He is the author of several books including Art and Social Movements: Cultural Politics in Mexico and Aztlan. He lives in Oaxaca with his husband, artist John Kaine.
