Synopsis:
This talk describes the Ethnography of Musical Cultures project in Oaxaca using recorded audio and video examples from musical performance, and interviews with people involved in music making or facilitating music production within the 16 ethnolinguistic groups in the State. It reflects on, ideally with the involvement of the talk’s participants, the roles of sound and in particular of music in the social and political life of rural communities and society as a whole, as well as its impact on human beings.
Bio:

Sergio Navarrete Pellicern is a flutist, ethnomusicologist and music historian. He worked as a professor at the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social, (ciesas) in Oaxaca and holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of London. He led the collaborative project "Ethnography of Musical Cultures in Oaxaca" and "Somos negros de la Costa/AfroMexican Musical Youth: Roots, Creativity, Community". Recently retired, he is planning to put more time into playing music with others, completing unfinished research articles and dedicating increased time to his family and friends
