About the event

Natural dyes have become very popular in the recent years. In Oaxaca, the use of natural colorants goes back to pre-Columbian times and cochineal is the most important dye, followed by indigo and murex (purple snail dye also called caracol purpura). Natural dyes today are used with modern recipes to achieve fastness on a variety of fibers – both plant and protein based. This presentation will give a broader understanding on where they come from and how are they are used in different regions of Oaxaca.

Presenters:

Eric Chavez Santiago was born and raised in Teotitlan del Valle, and speaks Zapotec, Spanish, and English. A weaver since the age of eight, he perfected over 100 recipes for cochineal dye by the time he was age 21. Eric was the founding director of education at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca and held that position from 2008 to 2016. In 2017 he led the project Andares del Arte Popular folk art gallery to promote indigenous craft hand-made in Mexico. He resigned in September 2022 to grow the family enterprise, Taller Teñido a Mano with his wife Elsa Sanchez Diaz, and to join Norma as a partner in Oaxaca Cultural Navigator. Eric is a graduate of Anahuac University and has made textile presentations throughout the world. He is knowledgeable about all forms of Mexican textiles and folk art.

Elsa Sanchez Diaz is a dye master and teacher of natural dyes, perfecting recipes of indigo and cochineal. She operates Taller Tenido a Mano with her husband Eric Chavez.
