Synopsis:
After a six-week escalating strike last fall, the Auto Workers (UAW) won contracts with the Big 3 automakers that reversed decades of concessions. Some workers will see their pay more than double. The UAW’s aggressive strategy came about because a rank-and-file reform movement pushed for democracy and got new leaders elected who were willing to surprise the companies.
Speaker Bio:
Jane Slaughter lives in Detroit. Retired editor of Labor Notes, a media and organizing project founded in Detroit in 1979. Co-author of Secrets of a Successful Organizer and other books. Worked at GM and Chrysler in the 1970s, covered the Auto Workers union for Labor Notes from 1979 to the present.
