About the event
Cartonería is a long-standing Mexican art form, used mainly as an inexpensive way to make figures that could as well be used to make piñatas, toys, devotional figures or for pagan festivals, such as Judas or pagan fair bulls, for example. As a way of weaving together contemporary Cartonería and the traditional forms, Gabo Mendoza will make a short introduction to his work where he will demonstrate how this art in contemporary works and historical forms are created from the same vital, artistic Mexican impulse. Gabo Mendoza’s taller is located in the Centro of Oaxaca and an on-site visit is a future possibility.
Gabriel(GABO) Mendoza Rodriguez was born in Mexico City in 1973. He began his art studies with the painter Nahúm B Zenil in the late eighties and later studied for a Bachelor of Art degree. He has been an assistant to various artists, including Guillermo Olguín, Pablo Amor, Sergio Hernández, and Demian Flores. He has created and conducted several children's plastic arts workshops at MACO and INEGI in Oaxaca, at the International Book Fair in the Zócalo, Mexico City, among other spaces. He has illustrated books for the Mexican national library system and FONCA, as well as for the newspapers El Imparcial and El Despertar, both in the city of Oaxaca. His work has been exhibited in several countries in the Americas and Europe.
