About the event
Tour Description:

We start our day in San Bartolo Coyotepec at the Museo de Arte Popular de Oaxaca (MEAPO), which has two exhibits going on right now. The first is the
BANAMEX Cup, which is an annual competition for folk art, and the pieces are always, always amazing. The other exhibit is the Diablos de Carnival, which explores the traditions of carnival of nearby Zaachila.
Next, we head across the street to the Black Pottery Artisan Market, which includes stall after stall of potters who work in both the 1950’s style high gloss

black pottery as well as some newer brown clay pieces. Walk around and explore the different styles each pottery works in.
We will have lunch at a roadside eatery on the way to our next stop.

We will then head out to San Martin Tilcajete to dive into the world of fantastical painted wooden figures. Incorrectly referred to as “Alebrijes” (those are from Mexico City and the creation of Pablo Lunares), Oaxaca is home to fantastical wooden figures carved out of wood. We’ll visit a family workshop to
learn the process of how the wood is selected, carved, treated, dried and painted, the end result a treasure.
This is a mostly non-curated day, allowing time for each person to enjoy and explore each location on their own.
Lunch will be around 1PM, expect to pay between $150 and $250 pesos for lunch.
Notes: Many workshops now accept credit cards, but cash is always appreciated by local artisans, especially for smaller pieces.
