About the event

Description:

The region around Oaxaca is filled with small, home-centered workshops which produce an amazing array of arts and crafts. Today we will visit four of these clustered in San Tomas Jalieza and San Antonino Castillo Velasco.

Our first stop will be at Telarte Guenda, a co-operative where native brown cotton is grown, harvested, spun into thread, dyed and then woven on backstrap looms.

Next we will visit the taller of Angel Aquilar, who makes incredible swords and knives from scrap metal.

Then it is on to Huella de Coyote, the small studio of Alfonso Conseco, a creative young artist who specializes in woodcut printing, but also paints and makes sculptures from carriso. The Flor Inmortal will be our arrangements utilizing dried flowers, such as adorn the basket headdresses seen in parades around Oaxaca.

Our last stop will be at the Aguja de Plata workshop where local women produce intricate, hand-embroidered designs on various articles of clothing.n will be updated soon.

Lunch Stop: For lunch we will stop at a couple of obscure neighborhood comedores whose specialty is an empanada unique to San Antonino - delicious and inexpensive! Cost of about 80 pesos for both food and beverage.
