About the event

Our first stop on today’s tour will be in San Antonino Castillo Valasco to visit the taller Manos Que Ven (Hands that See). This is the family workshop started by the internationally acclaimed sculptor Juan José Garcia Antonio who lost his sight about 20 years ago but retained his talent in his memory and in his hands. He has a special devotion to creating mermaids and to recreating the face of his beloved wife and partner Maestra Santa Reyna Teresita.

We will then go to the first collective of female alebrije artists in San Martin Tilcajete, Zoológico Mágico). Their wooden creations combine fantasy and mysticism, while providing training and employment for women throughout the area.

We will next visit the Navarro family in Santo Tomas Jalieza. Gerardo is an accomplished painter and his three sisters, Crispina, Balbina, & Magarita, work magic on their backstrap looms and will demonstrate the process for us. After lunch at the fabulous Almu we will return to Oaxaca.

Not included: We will have lunch at Almu, a delightful restaurant in Tilcajete. You will likely spend 200- 250 pesos for food and beverage.

Additional Costs:  None
