Tour Description: Las Hormigas Bordadoras (embroidering ants) de Tanivet is a women’s artist cooperative based in the pueblo of San Francisco Tanivet. These women have developed their own visual language using applique, quilting, and embroidery. Their work tells their stories of pain, family separation, and the migration of half their population to the US to find work in addition to more joyful depictions of everyday life. A major theme is losing children to migration, knowing that they may never see them again. Each woman draws, designs and sews her own story cloth. We will visit their

workshop and hear about their new projects, as they gain national and international recognition. We may be able to share bread and hot chocolate during our discussions.

We will then go to San Marcos Tlapazola, also known as the red clay pottery village. For generations, the women of the village have made their way to the hillsides to dig out the iron-oxide-rich earth needed for their work. We will visit Maria Cruz Martinez who will give us a demonstration of her work. Pieces are formed by hand with no pottery wheel used in the process. Simple tools made from leather, corn husks, and stone are passed down from mother to daughter and treasured within families. Pots and comals, dishes and mugs, and now more decorative pieces are on all on display (and available for sale).

Lunch: Lunch will be at a local restaurant in Tlacolula.

Additional Costs:   100 pesos for the Hormigas Bordadoras. Any items you want to purchase. Please bring cash lunch, Hormigas and other purchases.

This tour will depart on time at 9:00 am  from Calle Los Libres behind the Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before departure time. Unclaimed seats may be re-sold at boarding time.

Online ticket sales end at 7 pm the day before the tour. If the tour is sold out, you can take a chance that seats may be available and come to the boarding spot 15 minutes before departure. These seats must be paid for in cash.

No Refunds will be available. If you are not able to attend the event, you are welcome to sell your reservation to others. Please notify the library of change of name for reservation.
