About the event

Trip description

This tour will take us to three workshops where women will demonstrate their artistry and talk about their craft. About 15 minutes from Tlacalula, San Marcos Tlapazola has become known as the barro rojo (red clay) pottery village. For generations, the women of the village have made their way to the hillsides to dig out the iron-oxide rich earth needed for their work. Pieces are formed by hand with no pottery wheels in sight and we will witness the process. Simple tools made from leather, corn husks, and stone are passed down from woman to woman and treasured within families. Pots and comals, dishes and mugs, and recently more decorative pieces are all on display. We will then go to Teotitlan, where first we will visit Velas San Pascual,a candle workshop with a tradition going back several generations. Elaborate candles are fashioned by hand from beeswax sourced locally. The candles are both decorative and used for various rituals. Finally we will visit a very enterprising young woman who cultivates her own cochineal to ward off the rising price of this precious component of her weaving and dyeing business. And she has an organic farm. Lunch will follow at the farm, a true farm–to–table experience.

Lunch will be in Teotitlan –  about 200- pesos for food and drink..Not included:
