About the event

Tour Description: The Museo Estatal de Arte Popular de Oaxaca (State Museum of Popular Art of Oaxaca) or MEAPO in the municipality of San Bartolo Coyotepec showcases the folk art tradition of the state of Oaxaca, especially the Central Valleys region. It is dedicated to crafts and to the artisans and the cultures behind the items displayed. Most of its permanent collection consists of barro negro pottery created in the surrounding area.

The current main exhibit at MEAPO is "Youth of Excellence 2024"; displaying the fabulous submissions from more than 100 contest winners. Following the museum visit, we will go to the black pottery workshop of Doña Rosa, whose full name is Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto. In the 1950s, Doña Rosa discovered that she could change the color and shine of black pottery pieces by making some changes to how the clay pieces are handled. Just before the formed clay piece is completely dry, it is polished with a quartz stone and then fired at a slightly lower temperature than traditional pieces. After firing, the piece emerges a shiny black instead of a dull gray, making for more decorative than utilitarian pieces.

After lunch, the final stop of the day will be a visit to the feather workshop of Omar Cruz in Zaachila, where the exquisite headdresses (pinachos) used

in the traditional Zapotec Danza de la Pluma are crafted, along with jewelry and many other items. At both the black pottery and the feather workshops, the group will enjoy a demonstration of the processes used to create their unique products.

Additional costs: 150 pesos Feather workshop, 30 pesos MEAPO (optional donation). Lunch will be at a local restaurant in San Bartolo.
