About the event

Tour Description:El Carrizal is a small village nestled into the Sierra Norte mountains, between

Llano Grande and San Miguel del Valle. They are the only village in the Sierra Norte that grows

wheat. In addition to growing it, they also work the grain, some families dedicate themselves to

separating and milling, while other families, like Anahi and Memo who we will visit today, dedicate

themselves to making bread.

Our day starts with our drive to El Carrizal, which takes about an hour and 45 minutes, up through

Cuajimoloyas and Llano Grande, if you have not been up in this “high country”, you are in for a treat!

Arriving at Anahi’s home, we’ll start our bread making workshop around 10AM. While the bread is

resting before baking, we can enjoy a short walk in the forest behind her home, or you can sit and relax on their beautiful property.

The bread then gets moved to the oven to be baked. Once baked, we will head down through the

village (walking or on the bus, the choice is yours) to Vero’s home, where she has a small comedor

where we can enjoy either a trout lunch ($260 pesos) or breaded chicken ($120) or lentils with

plantain ($120). You’ll make your lunch choice when reserving your spot on the bus.

After lunch it is time to head home, soul full of gorgeous countryside, belly full of home cooking,

and memories to last a lifetime.

Additional Fee: A fee of $150 pesos per person for the bread workshop, paid directly to Anahi.

NOTE: It’s always cooler in El Carrizal, bring an extra layer for walking around. Also, bring some

extra cash. I usually end up leaving with a kilo or two of flour for baking, maybe some apples

or plums of whatever fruit is in season.

Lunch: Lunch will be around 2PM. Prices quoted above will be paid directly to the comedor owner.
