About the event
Tour Description: Día de la Candelaria is part of a religious festival observed in Catholic church services around the world. In Mexico, Candelaria has its own special traditions, some of which can be traced to Aztec times before Christianity came to Mexico in the 1500s. Known worldwide as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, this day commemorates the day when Christ’s mother Mary brought him to the Temple in Jerusalem for the first time. Candles are considered a symbol of the Virgin Mary's purity, and they are responsible for the name, "Candelaria". Día de la Candelaria always
falls on Feb. 2, exactly 40 days after Christmas and following Three Kings Day. The date of Feb. 2 coincided with celebrations in the Aztec calendar to ask the gods for rain and a bountiful harvest. Traditionally, the person who finds a baby Jesus figurine in their slice of the Rosca de Reyes bread provides tamales for all the other guests. The significance of tamales comes from the importance of maize to Indigenous pre-Hispanic populations. We will honor the tradition by starting our day with tamales and hot chocolate in Ixcotel across from the Archivo General as we head out of town. We will have a brief tour of the Archivo.
Another important custom in Mexico is for families to own a doll-sized version of baby Jesus called Niño Dios, or Christ Child. The Niño Dios is first placed in the home Nativity scene on Christmas Eve and then given gifts on Three Kings Day. On Candelaria, people dress up their Niño Dios and bring it to church with them, just as Jesus was believed to have been presented. We will go to the wonderful Sunday market in Tlacolula, then will go to the Church where celebrants arrive with their baby Jesus dolls.
After a buffet lunch we will travel to Mitla to the Frissell Museum of Zapotec Art. On recent tours, participants asked for more time at this museum.
