About the event

Trip description:

There once were significant gold mines in the mountains near Amatlan and Lachatao. Today what remains of the Cinco Señores hacienda is a wonderland of aqueducts, stone bridges and the disintegrating remains of homes, mine facilities and a church. This ore processing mill operated from the early 1720’s until it was severely damaged in

the Mexican Revolution. Benito Juárez and his family took refuge here, under the protection of the owner, Raul Castro, during one of his several spats with General Santa Ana in the 1850’s. The most impressive ruins still standing are the aqueducts and the mill structures that once held massive water wheels (some vertical, some horizontal)

which powered the mines’ production facilities.

You will definitely want to bring your camera! Pack a flashlight, too, if you want to poke around in mine tunnels.

Motion sickness alert!  The ride to and from Lachatao may induce dizzyness.

Additional charges:

Lunch stop: The group will enjoy lunch at the Linda Vista trout restaurant located in the mountains along Hwy 175 overlooking the Oaxaca Valley. Cost of lunch will likely be about 250 pesos.

The combined admission / guide fee: is 120 pesos per person
