About the event

Tour Description: Experience the magic of Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca like never before. All tour fees directly support En Vía’s interest-free microloan and business education programs for women entrepreneurs in Oaxaca. By joining us, you’re not just witnessing a tradition — you’re helping sustain it.

This exclusive collaborative event between the Oaxaca Lending Library and Fundación En Vía invites you to take part in one of Mexico’s most meaningful traditions — remembrance, community, and heartfelt connection.

A Day of Remembrance and Community

On Sunday, November 2, you’ll visit families in the Zapotec village of San Marcos Tlapazola, where locals exchange visits, admire altars, and share food to honor their loved ones. Through the warm hospitality of En Vía entrepreneurs and their families, you’ll learn about the customs and stories that make this day so special — perhaps helping prepare food, tasting homemade chocolate, or hearing the meanings behind each element of the altar.

About San Marcos Tlapazola

Founded in 1685, this Zapotec community of about 1,000 people is known for its striking red clay pottery, crafted almost entirely by women. Nearly all residents speak Zapotec, preserving both language and tradition across generations.

A Living Cultural Exchange

This tour will be flexible and family-centered, allowing you to experience traditions as they naturally unfold. Guided by our bilingual En Vía team, you’ll spend the day with one of our women entrepreneurs, gaining insight into her life, craft, and community.
