Tour Description:

Dive into a family tradition on our first stop today with the Santiago family. We’ll grind chocolate on the metate and watch how the

women turn a cacao bean into a drink that after one sip will having you closing your eyes and whispering a small prayer of gratitude. We´ll sit and enjoy chocolate de agua and bread with the family. Rocío and Malena are generous with their stories of how chocolate, the preparation, sharing and drinking of it is something that goes beyond culture and tradition and reaches into the thread that weaves a family and a community together.

We’ll then be invited into their rug workshop, a space which houses a loom dating back to 1899, and 5 generations of family

tradition. Learn about plants which contribute their natural dyes to the process and have an opportunity to shop or just feast your eyes on the family’s beautiful work.

Next, we’ll head up the road to a family that weaves with silk. Yes, silk! Learn about their process, from the growing and weaving of silk to the products produced with this divine thread.

Finally, over lunch at Don Agave, either relax in the shade of the beautiful restaurant and contemplate the differences and similarities in the processes of the two weaving families, or have one of the Don Agave team show you the mezcal making process.

You can sample and buy some excellent mezcals from Martha and her family.

NOTE: Textile and mezcal purchases can be made on your tour. Credit cards are accepted.
