About the event

Tour Description: Las Hormigas Bordadoras (embroidering ants) de Tanivet is a women’s artist cooperative based in the pueblo of San Francisco Tanivet. These women have developed their own visual language using applique, quilting, and embroidery. Their work tells their stories of pain, family separation, and the migration of half their population to the US to find work in addition to more joyful depictions of everyday life. A major theme is losing children to migration, knowing that they may never see them again. Each woman draws, designs and sews her own story cloth. We will visit their workshop and hear about their new projects, as they gain national and international recognition. We may be able to share bread and hot chocolate during our discussions. If you have any pieces of cotton and/or linen fabric, embroidery needles, sharp scissors to donate to the group in Tanivet, please bring them.

We will then go to San Miguel del Valle, a mountain village also known as the embroidered aprons pueblo. The elaborate aprons are worn by almost all the females in the village. Each artist develops her own designs based on local flora and fauna. These patterns are now also being used to embroider bags, shirts, and other items.

We will also spend time exploring the San Miguel Archangel church, filled with frescos and other antique treasures.

Lunch will be at a local restaurant in Tlacolula.

Not included: Cost of lunch; any items you wish to purchase

Additional cost: 100 pesos for the Hormigas Bordadoras chocolate
