About the event

Description:

This is the most festive Out & About trip of the season. No place in the Valles Centrales has a more outrageous Mardi Gras celebration than San Martin Tilcajete. Many dozens of young people dress in costumes to carouse through town, whooping and ringing cow bells and generally creating a scene. Upon our arrival in Tilcajete, we will stop first at the

famed alebrije workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles, where today the young staff of talented artists have the day off to dress in creative costumes of their own design. We will see them getting ready for the afternoon’s festivities. At 11 am they will parade into the heart of the town, merging with all the other Mardi Gras celebrants. At one o’clock we will board our van for the short drive to the Azucena Zapoteca restaurant for a delicious repast before continuing back to Oaxaca.

Be sure to bring your camera!

Caution: Do not wear good clothes, as they may get soiled brushing against the wildly

painted merrymakers.

Lunch will be at the Azucena Zapoteca restaurant near Tilcajete. All the food there is delicious, but the house specialty is chile en nogada, a dish you owe it to yourself to taste sometime during your stay in Oaxaca. Expect to pay about 250 pesos for lunch.
