In Oaxaca as in many other states in Mexico, it is customary for people to visit the graves of loved ones and to celebrate Day of the Dead in their cemetery. Beforehand, family members clean the graves of their deceased and many bring stools and stay for hours. They decorate the graves with marigolds and candles, and sometimes the departed’s favorite drinks and snacks.

Our tour will begin at the old cemetery (panteon) in Xoxocotlan. Participants will then walk, passing food and artisan vendors along the way, to the new cemetery where families are visiting graves of their departed inside and a band is playing outside. The somber mood of the old contrasts with the party mood of the new. Both celebrate the return of the souls of ancestors.

Tour coordinators and van drivers will determine timing and the group will then meet at a designated spot and proceed to the cemetery in Atzompa, noted for the many candles (velas) placed on the graves.

Please be respectful – We are welcomed to learn about cultural traditions and chat with people along the way  and even in the cemeteries. But be careful to not walk on graves.

Only take photos of people with their permission. Watch long skirts and flowing pants near the flames from the velas.

This tour will depart on time at 5:00 pm  from Calle Los Libres behind the Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before departure time. Unclaimed seats may be re-sold at boarding time.

Online ticket sales end at 7 pm the day before the tour. If the tour is sold out, you can take a chance that seats may be available and come to the boarding spot 15 minutes before departure. These seats must be paid for in cash.

No Refunds will be available. If you are not able to attend the event, you are welcome to sell your reservation to others. Please notify the library of change of name for reservation.
