About the event
Trip Description: In the Christian tradition Palm Sunday or Domingo de Ramos marks the start of Holy Week, which culminates with the celebration of Easter eight days later. The day commemorates the triumphal arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem. Catholic churches mark the day with a blessing and distribution of palms to the faithful. Some parishes also sponsor a procession near the church.
But no community near the city of Oaxaca has a celebration quite like the one in San Antonino Castillo Velasco. There residents gather at the local cemetery to adorn, meaning completely cover, a burro with the best local fruit and flowers for a grand procession to the village church. The result is very heavy and needs to be carried by many men. What also sets this celebration apart is the custom of people bringing gifts including livestock, which will be auctioned off after
Mass to raise funds for the upkeep of the church and to support community services. The procession of several hundred people includes live animals, birds, articles of clothing, many baskets of food, baked goods, fruit and so on - and of course multiple colorful flower bouquets.
There will be food vendors in the town square waiting to provide lunch to all comers. And there is usually an expo venta, with goods from local embroiderers and other artisans.
So come join in this festive celebration! Bring a hat, sunscreen, and your camera.
Not included: Lunch or snacks from food vendors set up around the town square.
