About the event

About this Tour: Las Hormigas Bordadoras de Tanivet (embroidering ants) is women’s artist coop from San Francisco Tanivet, who developed their own visual

language using appliqué and embroidery. Their work tells their stories of pain, family separation, and migration of half their population to the US to find work. We will visit their workshop and hear about their new projects, as they gain national and international recognition. We will then go to San Miguel del Valle, a mountain village, where elaborate aprons worn by almost all the females in the village are crafted. Each artist develops her own designs based on local flora and fauna. These patterns are now also being used to embroider bags, shirts, and other useful items. We will conclude our visit by spending time exploring the San Miguel Archangel church, filled with frescos and other antique treasures.

If you have any pieces of cotton and/or linen fabric, embroidery needles, sharp scissors, to donate to the group in Tanivet, please bring them.

Not included:  Lunch will be at a restaurant in El Tule – about 200-270 pesos for food and drink.

Additional Costs:  None, but small donation at the church. Please bring cash for purchases as credit cards are not accepted
