About the event
San Pedro Cajonos, founded in 1700, sits at an altitude of 1848 meters ( 6063 feet) in the
Sierra Norte mountains 94 Kms (58 miles) northeast of Oaxaca. The town is home to 1100
people. It is notable chiefly because several families in the village grow silkworms, from which
they spin and dye silk and then weave it on backstrap looms. We will visit Moises Martinez
Velasco and his family, perhaps the most celebrated silk weavers. Also on the agenda will be a
stop to see grandmothers working with ixtle - agave fibers. The agave leaves are stripped,
soaked, pounded to soften them, and then spun into 2-ply strands which are woven to make
sturdy bags.
Be forewarned that it is a long ( three hour) and arduous drive to Cajonos, but there is
wonderful scenery on the way to this remote village. Those who experience motion sickness
should come prepared. Another word of caution: this is a rustic town built on a steep
mountainside, so there are steps and sloping sidewalks everywhere. Tour participants should
wear sturdy shoes and watch their footing carefully.
Because of the long distance and added travel time, this tour will cost 500 pesos for OLL members and 550 pesos for non-members.
Lunch: will be in one of the small local restaurants. Expect limited menu, but tasty food at a good price.
