About the event
Tour Description: January 6 is Three Kings Day (El Día de los 3 Reyes Magos) in Mexico. This is Epiphany or Twelfth Night on the church calendar, the 12 th day after Christmas, to commemorate the arrival of the Magi or Wise Men who came bearing gifts for the Christ child. Catholic Friars introduced the holiday into Mexico during the Colonial period.
The traditional day for Mexican children to receive gifts is January 6, though some now wait for Santa Claus on December 24. We will start the day visiting the La Ciudad de los Niños y las Niñas, an orphanage outside of the city of Oaxaca. This wonderful facility is home to about 50 children and teens, ranging from toddlers to age 17. Most are orphans, but some come from local families that cannot afford to keep them in their homes. The children go to local schools. We will be bringing gifts, learning about the facility, and participating in morning activities.
It is customary for families and friends to gather to drink hot chocolate or atole and eat Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread shaped like a wreath with candied fruit on top and a plastic figurine of a baby Jesus baked inside. The person who finds the figurine in their slice is expected to host a party on Dia de la Candelaria, February 2. We will go to Panetla Panaderia Artisanal where master baker Paco Goro will discuss and demonstrate masa madre (sourdough) bread-making methods. Paco promises we will share a Rosca de Reyes and hot chocolate, and you may purchased breads and other
sweets to take home.
Then we are off to CaSa, the Centro de las Artes San Augustin to view the fantastic Toledo Ve exhibit, a wonderful new installation featuring a wide variety of the works of Francisco Toledo. The exhibit is made up of graphic work created for the most part in the 70s and early 80s, in collaboration with Armando Colina and Victor Acuña. CaSa is housed in an early 20th century textile mill converted into galleries, workshops, and performance spaces. The beautiful pools that surround the building are part of a gravity-powered water system that cools the roof and supplies a nearby paper-making
workshop. Maestro Toledo was instrumental in the artistic and ecological design of the arts center.
The tour fee includes funds for a donation to Ciudad de Los Ninos and purchase of small gifts for the children. If you would like to make an additional donation, there will be an envelope at the desk at the OLL. The orphanage is building a new dormitory to replace one destroyed by the 2017 earthquake, and to allow housing more children.
Additional costs: Lunch at a local restaurant. 60 pesos for the panaderia demonstration, tasting, and hot chocolate.
