About the event

Tour Description: The day will start with a visit to the Iglesia San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya, built in the 16 th century. In Nahuatl, ‘Tlacochahuaya’ means in the wetland, or in the swamp. Saint Jerome is recognized as the patron of translators: the one who dedicated himself to explaining the Bible in several countries.

Like many Latin American pueblos, the name combines a Christian saint with an indigenous reference. The ceilings and vaults of the temple, a clear example of Oaxacan baroque, are adorned with frescoes with plant motifs. It is sometimes referred to as the Zapotec ‘Sistine Chapel’. A local

guide will point out the details and history of this sacred place, including the original organ still in use here.

The Agroecological Village "Tierra del Sol"; is a center of regenerative agriculture (permaculture) located on a 4-hectare rural property adjacent to the town of Tlacochahuaya. Tierra del Sol is a space designed for the cultivation of healthy foods, ecological restoration, and environmental education. At Tierra del Sol they offer courses and workshops and children’s tours, with the aim of sharing knowledge and training people to transform their environments and communities. On the tour they will talk about their methods of growing food to combat the negative effects of traditional

commercial agricultural systems, particularly in the central valleys of Oaxaca. The discussion will include some of the challenges that are still not solved. We will be fortunate to have our experience guided by Pablo Ruiz, the founder and guiding light of this project. The in-depth tour takes about 3

hours and will be followed by a special lunch prepared from produce grown in the onsite garden.

The fees for the tour help fund educational training for neighboring communities, where there are financial limitations on implementing the principles and methods of regenerative agricultural practices. There is also a store selling seasonal products from the site, with availability depending on

weather and availability of raw materials. Each product is made by hand and does not contain preservatives. Their honey garnered high praise from visitors last year.

Feedback from OLL visitors in 2024: “The guide at the church in Tlacochahuaya is one of the best since I’ve been here in terms of explanations and answering questions from the group.”  “The visit to Tierra del Sol was a truly inspiring experience.” “ … sharing a truly exceptional meal in this oasis …

will stand out as a highlight of my time in Oaxaca.”
