About the event
Tour Description: This 3-day tour will take us to the Oaxaca coast, where we will spend 2 nights in Puerto Escondido. From our base, we have planned excursions that concentrate on the
natural wonders and some of the cultural traditions of the area.
On our way to Puerto Escondido we will stop at Playa Ventanilla, Mazunte. This beautiful and exotic site is home to birds, iguanas, turtles, and crocodiles. Our visit to the Escobilla Sanctuary will support conservation, and we will learn about the work being done to protect nature and support sustainability in the local community. We may witness a sea turtle release on the beach and learn how these creatures reproduce.
Over the 3 days of the tour we will go to the Manialtepec coastal lagoon. Multiple species of birds nest here, including wild ducks, storks and “tijerillas”. Fish species to be found include mojarra, sea bass, catfish and striped mullet. Several times a year, more or less, the lagoon becomes phosphorescent due to a type an algae that lives in the lagoon. The organism's luminescence is activated by the movement of the water. At night, streaks of light can be seen due to the movement of fish (and humans) in the water. Experts cannot predict when it will be bioluminescent as that depends on moon phases, warmth of the water, and many other factors, but It a fascinating place in its own right.
The Tixinda weaving cooperative named Mexican Dreamweavers uses the purple dye
(tixinda) obtained from the endangered caracol púrpura snails to produce fabric made
into elaborately patterned blouses as well as gently hued pillowcases and table
coverings. Other natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo are used with handspun
regional white and brown “coyuchi” cotton yarns on traditional backstrap looms. We will
meet with a few of the weavers to learn about this process and to offer our support.
There will be an opportunity to purchase items from them (with no obligation to do so).
Finally, before heading back to Oaxaca we will go on a whale/dolphin watching boat
tour. Captains of boats doing these tours stay in touch while out on the water to share
sightings so that others can move location when pods are seen. Though nature is
unpredictable, the peak season for whales surfacing is December through February, just
perfect for our tour.
We have chosen two hotels that are close to each other along the beach. You can
reserve a room at either one. First is the charming hacienda Hotel Santa Fe, which will
be our home base. This hotel located in a beautiful setting with a veranda and restaurant/bar that overlook the Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido. There is beach access, and the hotel also has two pools. The second is the Hotel Rockaway is also located on Playa Zicatela, a 10-15 minute walk from the Santa Fe. The recently renovated Rockaway has two pools and offers a free buffet breakfast. Rooms in both hotels have air conditioning.
